BLE 5.0 Remote Control with Backlight

Description

A coin-cell battery powered BLE 5.0 appliance remote control with 2-year battery life.
The compact PCBA size of 32 x 63.6 x 4.2mm1 allows slim and small handheld remote control design.
Aside from 7 indication LEDs, there are 12 LEDs as night time backlight function.
Tag-Connect™ footprint was used to minimize programming pins area.

Various design methods were used to achieve long battery life:

  • Low Iq (typ. 28uA) and low shutdown current (max 1uA) TI TPS61040 boost converter ICs were used for indication and backlight LEDs supply
  • Use of TI TS5A1066 analog switch with 0.1uA Ileakage to cutoff supply to boost converter ICs completely
  • Tactile switches from C&K KMR2 series which are rated for ultra-low current operation of 1uA@1.8V were used
  • Device was powered by 620mAH CR2450 coin-cell battery with similar thickness (<=5mm) as PCBA
  • Opted for lower-duty higher-peak current to achieve similar human-perceived brightness for indication LEDs
